This snarling tiger is one of two that guard Princeton's oldest building, which originally housed all the university's classrooms, offices, and residences. These statues were preceded by a pair of bronze lions, the original Princeton mascots. The story goes that sportswriters began referring to Princeton athletes, clad in the school colors of orange and black, as tigers, and soon afterward the king of beasts was obligingly replaced as school mascot.

The ivy has not been removed from the building, even though it is damaging the walls, because each clump of vines was planted by a graduating class.
