The CD is devoted entirely to John Cage's 4'33" for piano, which consists of nothing but silence. Peter was a bit disappointed when he first played it to find that the total playing time was actually 4'35" until he realized that the work was in three movements with a second's pause between each of them. The book is Tristram Shandy, by Laurence Sterne, who tells us that "without . . . much knowledge you will no more be able to penetrate the moral of the next marbled page . . . than the world."
