The late Rene Levesque, whose bronze effigy here seems about to lecture passersby, was premier of Quebec from 1976 to 1985. He was an outspoken and ardent proponent of Quebec's secession from Canada. It has been said of him that he was more comfortable speaking to a crowd of thousands than to individuals, with whom he had trouble expressing himself.
