Starting in 1835, the Methodist Church held its annual summer-camp meetings here. Over the years, the campers' tents became more elaborate and were eventually replaced by small cottages. Even as the cottages took on colorful gingerbread trappings, the neighborhood retained its campground layout. The Methodist Camp Meeting Association now leases out the 300-odd cottages here on its land.
